Although I would never call my parents child abusers, being raised a JW is essentially child abuse. The effects are similar. Throw in a teenage disfellowshipping, as I had to live through, and the kid has a real struggle to find happiness. Distrust of others and a low standard for life quality are two big characteristics of the abused and those raised JW, especially those JWs who have enjoyed judicial reprimand.

Is being brought up a Jehovah's Witness child abuse?
by digderidoo inif you feel that it was abuse then why?.
personally my parents became jw's when i was 13 so i never had the earlier years within the religion.
but by being controlled so much during my teen years i would liken it to abuse.

Good post and all, but the title statement is about as surprising to this group as would be:
"My cab driver is a Muslim!"

Do you say "Bless you" when some one sneezes?
by cyberjesus indo you believe it does nothing and still continue to fuel superstition?.
do you think is polite?
cultural?

I did when I first left the org, but now think better of it. It is actually pretty hard not to say it sometimes, as it is the expected thing to do. I don't feel a sneeze is an event requiring religious speech.

What if JWs are right?!?
by brotherdan ini know this is a pointless question, but what if this happened:.
you came home from work one day, sat down, and turned on the tv.
there is a sudden announcement that the un has banned all religion.

What if you saw a ruling from the UN, to be implemented in all countries of the world, banning religion. Would you immediately think, "The WT was right"?
My first thought would be "Oh, good. Humanity can finally move forward."
It seems obvious that humankind has a track record of overcoming superstition little by little, which will eventually lead to a shedding of all things religious.
If the WT had given a correct date for this to happen, it would be a lot more impressive, but they have not.
It is like giving an open ended prediction that the dollar will collapse. Of course it will, someday, but without specifics one can't be called a prophet as much as an observer of history.

Does Anyone Have a Postable Video of a Congregation Meeting?
by new light init would be kind of interesting to see one without the sacrifice of actually going to a kh.
it has been a few years for me now and it would be a good way to check the old mileage since exiting.
"how much more ridiculous are meetings than last time i went" is my point of view.. so.. would anyone be willing and able to post any congregation meeting videos?.

Avoiding the Meeting
by brotherdan inso, darth plaugeis (or however you spell it) has suggested that the best way to get out of going to the meeting is to tell your wife that it's time to get ready for the meeting, and when her back is turned hit her over the head with a large object.. i'm sure there are better ways to get out of going.
i'm looking for some real ideas here.
" i like the whole getting your wife (or husband) drunk before the meeting so they won't want to go idea.

I do not agree with living a lie, but I do understand wanting to stay married, so...
You will lose face and probably appear physically weak, but this will get you out of meetings.
Rub some pepper into your face or smoke a ton of reefer before you enter the KH. I guess you could just rub your eyes a lot in the bathroom. The point is to look like you are severely allergic to something in the building and cannot physically tolerate being inside.
This should have you attending by phone line if your congo is so equipped, even better if it is not, which means you never have to go to that particular KH again and you remain a JW in "good standing".
Maybe attend your last few meetings with a dust mask on to appear to be giving it a massive effort, but, in the end, your imperfect body wins and you long for the new system when you will not have these horrible allergies.
I have seen this work with a sister who almost never went to a meeting, yet was well respected and viewed as a saint for the slightest effort.

To serving elders and anyone else who went to the SM this week ...
by wannabefree injw serving elders ... did any of you have to handle the part at the sm this week on why jehovah's witnesses are not a false prophet?.
this part made me livid.
our most corporate elder handled this part and i felt my self wanting to refute everything he said.

Insightful words, Marcus, and welcome to the board.
I was not around for the 1975 thing, but your words ring 100% true. There is no way the society would ever tolerate a grassroots date setting. There would have been talks and articles clearly threatening the involved with disfellowshipping. What an enlightening perspective you have shared! I wonder what other gems you will come up with. Great stuff.

A JW MOTHER'S SO CALLED LOVE
by elm inbefore i tell you my story i just want to say thank you to everyone on this forum for their sometimes funny, and sometimes sad, and sometimes very thought provoking posts, it has helped me a lot.. my family, which consists of a younger brother and a younger sister and my parents.
we began studying with the jw's as a family (mother's insistence) in the mid 1980's.. i was then 13, my sister 12, my brother 7, my mother thought she found the answer to all life's problems and became fully brainwashed, and hence if we wanted to be a happy family we had to all become jw's, and so because we were young and mainly to keep our mother happy we all became jw's.. all i can say is my parents life might have been, happier but mine was far from happy.
i left home as soon as i could i was 16.. my sister at 18 got married to a jw, and they bought a house and settled in to married life, when my sister had her first child at 19 her son was 6 weeks old when my parents moved into their home for a few weeks, while their new home was ready to move into.. during their stay in my sisters home they all got on really well despite a small house and no room to move.

Welcome to the board, Elm!
That is a pretty shocking story, and that is impressive in the world of JW craziness. Your mother joined an exclusive club by schtupping her new son-in-law, but claiming it was rape and trashing this guy's already tarnished reputation even more all these years later in front of his own children puts her in elite company.
She is one antisocial, narrcissistic hellcat!
You mentioned your father was living in the house also. How did he take the news and what became of him?
